Altrincham Garrick Playhouse in Greater Manchester required a significant upgrade to its ageing audio infrastructure

The Requirement

The Altrincham Garrick Playhouse required a significant upgrade to its ageing audio infrastructure to meet the demands of modern musical theatre, drama, and occasional live music. The brief called for a system with greater output and bandwidth than that which it replaced, whilst achieving improved consistency of coverage and maximum vocal intelligibility. The system needed to be versatile enough to handle both high-SPL music events and discreet enough not to detract from intimate theatrical performances.

The Audio System

The loudspeaker system is built around CODA Audio technology, which was selected for its very high output, extended frequency response,  and compact size. The Left, Centre and Right channels are served by CODA Audio HOPS12 loudspeakers. In-fill is provided by a pair of CODA Audio HOPS5, and lip-fill by a set of three D5 Cubes fitted to the downstage edge.

To extend reproduction below the 44Hz offered by the HOPS12i-Pro, a CODA Audio U4 subwoofer, suspended with a custom flying solution for efficiency and evenness of coverage, brings the system’s low end response down to 25Hz. The loudspeakers are processed and driven by three CODA Audio Linus 6.4i-D amplifiers, bringing the benefits of Coda’s proprietary DS-FIR processing to achieve linear phase right down into the bass region.

Adlib’s Senior Application Engineer, Tim Robinson, said: “It’s hard to put into words the way we perceive phase-linear sound, but the transient response, the throw, the resistance to feedback, and the cohesiveness of a mix are all hallmarks of a Coda system which cannot be emulated just by tuning something to measure the same in the magnitude domain.”

Outcome

The new installation provides the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse with a bigger, better sound system. The transition to a CODA Audio system equips the venue with the very best in loudspeaker technology and provides a robust platform for its full programme of productions and events.
