The return of Battle of the Brits to Aberdeen’s P&J Live Arena brought together top players from across the UK for a two-day team event with a live and broadcast audience. The event required a well-rounded technical delivery covering lighting, audio, comms, video, and rigging, all designed to support both the live experience and production needs of a televised sporting event.
Specific requirements included reliable front-lighting for player intros and presentations, background haze to support broadcast visuals, high-quality FOH and monitoring audio systems, and robust infrastructure for video control and LED screen management. All systems needed to be easy to operate, discreetly deployed, and reliable across the full run of matches.
Adlib provided a full-service technical package, covering key elements of the production setup with kit chosen for flexibility, reliability, and ease of deployment in a live sports context.
The Adlib team deployed an L-Acoustics K-Series loudspeaker system throughout the venue. The main PA was built around 52 K2, with KARA II and X8 cabinets used for lip fill, delays and coverage to less accessible zones. L-Acoustics LA12X amplifiers, along with LADRAK and LARAK amp racks, powered the system. Control and processing were managed via an Adlib standard control rack and P1 processors on stage left and right.
FOH audio was mixed using a Yamaha CL5 digital console with two Rio3224-D I/O racks, alongside a 48-channel Adlib splitter and QLab playback rack. For presenters and musical moments, additional loudspeakers included L-Acoustics 108P and 5XT cabinets.
A range of Sennheiser and Shure wireless systems were supplied for player interviews, court mics and musical elements. This included:
Onstage and behind the scenes, Adlib crew comms were handled using a Green-Go digital comms system, with additional TecPro beltpacks and headsets where required.
The lighting brief required clean front washes, visual interest for presentation sequences, and haze coverage to support broadcast camera shots.
The main lighting rig featured:
These were supported by comprehensive distro and power infrastructure, including StageSmarts C72tv units, SES Type 14 distro, and multiple lighting multicore runs. Control was provided by grandMA2 light consoles, with a dedicated FOH and stage rack system and long fibre runs across the floor.
Atmospherics were delivered by three Hazebase The Fab hazers and a selection of TMB ProFans.
The flown LED system used ROE CB5 panels configured into a 10.8m x 6m LED wall, running on Brompton Tessera SX40 and XD processors. Control was handled from a Ross Carbonite-based 4K PPU, supported by dedicated operator systems, routers, and conversion equipment for integrating live and pre-recorded content.
A small LED scoreboard and signage system used Unilumin UpadIIIH05 panels and was controlled via a Barco PDS-902 switcher.
Signal distribution and fibre management included Theatrixx converters, video looms, and Canford quad fibre systems, with all cabling routed and tested for reliability during live use.
All flown elements were supported by Total Fabrications OV40 and SMD truss, with over 90 rigging points managed by Adlib’s in-house riggers. The flown package included EXE 1T D8+ motors and LoadGuard 1.6T motors, with distribution and control via DigiHoist motor controllers, and a full set of steelwork, shackles, and spansets.
Audio-specific rigging included K2-BUMP and KARA M-BUMP frames, along with a full set of pullbacks and inclinometers for accurate array deployment.
Adlib played a pivotal role in the 2022 Battle of the Brits, guaranteeing a flawless audience and broadcast experience throughout the two-day competition. Their technical expertise ensured consistent and effective performance of all elements, from RF reliability to lighting aesthetics, within the demanding sporting environment.
Adlib collaborated closely with the production and broadcast teams to provide a comprehensive technical solution. This encompassed lighting, audio, video, rigging, and infrastructure, ensuring the event operated seamlessly both on-site and on-screen.
