The Brief
Wetherby Pembridge required a versatile performance space capable of matching its new facility. The brief called for a professional-grade theatre environment that could function as a 125-seat auditorium while maintaining the flexibility to clear the floor for alternative uses via a Hussey Seatway retractable seating system.
"The theatre is very much at the heart of school life so it needs to function as an auditorium, it also needs to lend itself to the teaching of academic drama, to co-curricular drama, to being a multi-use open space, it really needs to be extremely versatile but equipped to a really high standard." - Nick Page, Founding Headmaster, Wetherby Pembridge.
The installation needed to provide a future-proof foundation for the school's performing arts pillar, integrating professional-standard audio, lighting, video, and rigging systems. Critically, the solution included a custom-built proscenium with birch plywood cladding to define the stage area within the basement theatre.
Audio
The installed audio system is built around a networked digital infrastructure, designed to provide high-clarity speech reinforcement and full-range musical fidelity.
Main PA & Control
The primary system is an L-Acoustics performance system comprising a KS21 subwoofer with three A10 wide-format enclosures, and two X8 loudspeakers serving as delays, ensuring consistent coverage across the 13 rows of seating. System amplification is provided by 4-channel L-Acoustics LA4X amplifiers.
At the heart of the control system is an Allen & Heath QU24 digital mixing console, paired with a Front of House (FOH) equipment rack-mounted AR2412 stagebox. Audio signal processing is managed via a QSC Core DSP, integrating the main PA with secondary wall-mounted speakers and a live video relay system.
Microphones & Monitoring
A Sennheiser 6000 Series wireless system was supplied, comprising EM6000 receivers, SKM 6000 handhelds, and SK 6000 bodypacks with headsets. The wired microphone package includes industry standards such as the Shure SM58 and SM57, alongside a Sennheiser drum mic kit. Stage monitoring is handled by dedicated wedge monitors providing six artist monitor mixes.
Communications & Paging
For production coordination, a network-based Ring Intercom Master Station (Green-Go) was installed. This is supported by a GDS IP-based Concept CueSystem with a portable Master base station and six cue light Outstations. The venue also features a digital dual-loop call system for FOH and Back of House paging, with video relay to all green, dressing, and technical rooms.

Lighting
The lighting system was designed to offer dynamic, full-stage coverage featuring a versatile selection of ETC ColorSource fixtures, including Spot, Fresnel, and Cyc Wash units. Dynamic lighting is provided by Martin ERA 300 LED moving profiles and Martin MAC Aura XB moving washes. Prolight 150w COB Pars provide additional general coverage.
Control & Dimming
Control is provided by an ETC Ion XE console with a fader wing, communicating via an ETC 4 Port Mk 2 DMX gateway. Power distribution and dimming are handled by 96 channels of ETC ColorSource ThruPower system. For architectural and house lighting, GDS Sculptor 2K and Puppis 4K fixtures were installed, powered by a centralised GDS Drive Hub.
The multi-purpose nature of the space also informed the lighting design. As the school noted, the hall may need to accommodate 200 students sitting exams, requiring the lighting system to be capable of driving ambient levels up to 500 lux, the standard required for examination conditions. The ETC Paradigm architectural system handles this seamlessly alongside its theatrical functions and offers complete integration via the Q-SYS Core and associated Touchscreen.
Video
A high-performance 7,200-lumen Panasonic laser projector forms the centrepiece of the video system, paired with a 6.5-metre 16:9 motorised tension roller screen. The system is designed for high-impact visuals and live recording, featuring PTZ 12x DSI G2 cameras, IP-based PTZ Control, a video signal switch via a Blackmagic Video Hub, and a Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Mini for recording and building-wide streaming.
The PTZ cameras also serve a broader campus function, enabling live streaming to classrooms throughout the school, allowing events such as headmaster lectures or whole-school addresses to be broadcast directly to students wherever they are on site.
Signal management is handled via HDMI-to-Ethernet encoders and decoders, enabling seamless distribution to Samsung 24- and 32-inch Smart TVs used as comfort monitors and relay displays.

Rigging & Stage Infrastructure
The space features a robust rigging and masking system to accommodate professional theatre standards.
Motorised Systems
The PA hangs and FOH trusses are suspended using 250kg and 500kg SWL double-braked motorised chain hoists, managed via a centralised motor control system. This allows for safe and efficient adjustments to the rig height for different performance types.
Trussing & Soft Goods
Overstage lighting is mounted on three motorised internally wired bars (IWBs) equipped with Power, Ethercon, and DMX connectivity. Adlib designed and manufactured a bespoke in-house Flip-Flop cable management system for these bars, so named because the cabling trail runs down from a terminal box at the top, folds back on itself, and spreads out across the full width of the bar, keeping cabling neat and manageable as the bars travel.
In addition, seven manual pilewind winches, also an Adlib in-house design, were installed for masking and soft goods. Operable with a standard drill, students simply disengage the brake and drive the winch up or down, making the system safe and accessible for use in an educational environment.
The stage area includes manual tab tracks for house tabs, borders, and back-wall masking. Adlib supplied a complete set of black wool serge curtains, a light grey cyclorama, a reversible black/grey dance floor, and a storage trolley.
Result
The final system installed at Wetherby Pembridge school is a fully integrated production infrastructure. The theatre provides a versatile platform for students to explore the creative and technical aspects of the performing arts. Nick Page, Founding Headmaster at Wetherby Pembridge, noted that a whole-school production at the end of term saw the space "function incredibly well, both from a technical and a production delivery perspective."
Page was equally positive about the working relationship: "We are looking for a partner who can really deliver in terms of the really high-level of specification that we need but also back that up with the knowledge and the level of support and we found working with Adlib to be a really positive experience."
Built around scalable, networked systems for audio, video, and lighting, the venue is future-proof and ready to support the school's ambitions for many years to come.
